I am on a fixed budget and she eats about $150 of elegant medley's/month. It's getting beyond my budget. She is a very, very finicky eater. She will not eat any other canned food. Also, any dry food can't contain any food coloring because it upsets her stomach. Any suggestions?|||Fancy feast runs about $1 a can. Feed your cat less. Keep buying the food but do this: Half in the morning, half at night. Do that and it should run you about $30/month. Or $60/month and feed her one can day and one can night.|||Try Purina cat foods (dry or wet). She might reject it for a bit, but she'll eat it once she gets hungry enough.|||Feed her some other canned food. She'll eat it when she gets hungry. Their stomachs will override their taste buds, just like humans, you may not like the taste of something, but you'll eat it if you're hungry and that's all that's on hand. It may help to sprinkle a little catnip on it to interest her more in it.
I used to be a finicky eater too, but my mother always told me, that if I didn't like what was for dinner, I was more than happy to skip it. I turned out alright.|||A finicky cat will switch to another healthy food if you do it gradually, mixing the new food with the old in different proportions over a few days. We just had to switch our cats to a different food because of an allergy, and one of them refused at first, until we set up a gradual mixing schedule. Say, 10% new food with 90% old the first day, 20%/80% the second day, etc. It is some trouble, but worth doing in your circumstance. Good luck.
By the way: if you can find a nearby store that sells it, "EVO" comes in larger cans. One can will feed a cat for 2-3 days -- ask for a plastic lid so you can keep the unused food sealed in the fridge until it's gone. It fairly economical as well as being good for cats with sensitivities to dyes and grains.|||WOW! I am absolutely blown away that you could let it get to that point! How fat is this cat? I mean, geez, that is a L-O-T of food!
But seriously, if your cat gets hungry it WILL eat. It will eat whatever you put out for it when it really needs something. I saw on the news a few weeks ago that in a study it was found that cats use purring and meowing as methods of getting their way. Sort of like how a child will cry when it wants something because it knows that you will respond to it in the manner that it wants.
If your cat can't have certain foods, perhaps you should try this (it's also what my boyfriend's mother did for her dog of similar discerning taste): look on Amazon or at your local Borders/Barnes %26amp; Noble for a book on cooking your own gourmet/organic pet foods. This is actually a more healthy way to feed an animal than any products that Fancy Feast, Purina, or Meow Mix has ever/will ever make. And a lot of the recipes are for treats, too. For example, my boyfriend's mother cooks their snooty Sheltie simple meals from turkey liver, eggs, and brown rice pureed in the blender. She can make lots of little meals in one cooking session and thus save money on food, and then she will freeze the little individual meals in little plastic baggies, then thaw a couple in the fridge for the next day's meals. It only costs her about $15 to made a few week's worth of meals! This way you could make your cat's food from the ingredients that she likes: you could make tuna or salmon dinners for much cheaper than what you are paying now, or perhaps turkey and chicken dinners if that is the flavors she likes better! I will put a link below to some books on Amazon that could get you started. I hope this helps! Let me know how you end up handing the situation, I'm interested in hearing about this cat that eats a whopping $150 worth of fancy feast meals each month...|||Have you tried Iams, Natural Choice, or Max Cat canned foods. FF is the little cans and they can be pricey compared to the larger cans.|||Wow, you're overpaying on the food.
It's cheaper to buy by the case, your pet supplies store can do you a deal on bulk purchases.
Does she eat off of your plate? You can supplement with baked chicken (no skin or bones), or other meats that don't have salt or pepper added to them. And I'd also try seeing if she'll take Wellness Core or plain Wellness (both are canned now).
